Poppy’s River – Graduate exhibition

Poppy’s River

This project is a time based exploration that opened up via my direct engagement with the Kaeo community, a small flood-prone township in the far north of New Zealand. In this place I have built new relations that have guided me and at the same time have questioned my authorial presence.

Poppy’s river is a real site in the landscape, a cove along the river where I came across the geodes, stones containing circular formations of different coloured stone and galena fragments. This site holds relevance for the family that I have stayed with and is a location that I have visited multiple times. The series of works speak of my interactions with this landscape and the perceptions of my collaborators.

A workshop took place in two parts during the winter, where I presented a group of children from Whangaroa College with the opportunity to make their own version of the geodes found in the river that runs through Kaeo.

I think Poppy is missing you and your tummy rubs cause she keeps following me and staring at me, more than usual and her eyes are asking me to scratch her tummy. How can I refuse those sad little eyes.
